I will be posting all my thoughts and information on the 2012 London Olympic Games and all the sports one could bet on. Feel free to throw in some comments or information at any point.
Pre-Day 2 (Thursday, July 26)
Men's Soccer - First Round
Honduras +0.5 (10 Units)
Let's not forget right off the bat that this is an UNDER-23 tournament with every Country allowed to use 3 over-age players. Should be interesting. In the leadup matches to this event, the Moroccan Olympic Team did not win a single match from what I have on record. I saw them lose to the Mexican Olympic team, I saw them draw the France UNDER-20 team and then I saw them draw with the Belarus Olympic team. Honduras played in the 2008 Olympics but did not fare too well losing all three matches to Italy, Cameroon and South Korea in what had to be considered a very tough group but they have it easier this time around and we can probably count on them to score at least one goal.
Honduras 1, Morocco 1
Korea Republic +0.5 (10 Units)
Once again making a charge at the underdogs because the books are only setting lines based on Men's National Team statuses and not the UNDER-23 group. Don't get me wrong, Mexico has a very good UNDER-23 team but they are not the same. This is Korea Republic's Group to lose with Gabon and Switzerland being the other opponents and I just don't see the value in betting on Mexico. The Moroccan Olympic team managed 3 goals against them in their preparation matches and then they lost to the France UNDER-20 team. Their last two leadup matches were against a young Turkey UNDER-21 B Team and a young UNDER-21 Netherlands team (both wins). Korea keeps this close.
Korea 2, Mexico 1
Japan +1.5 (10 Units)
I want to back Spain but I know the world is going to be on them in this match just because of their status on the National stage right now. No need to lose your minds though. As good as this Spanish squad is at this level as well, they are not the Spain we have all come to know in recent years. Japan played in the 2008 Olympic Games and lost all three matches to pretty good opponents but they had a very good leadup camp to this tournament and although they did not fare well in some of their prep matches, the Japanese have speed and they can neutralize Spain's ball movement and keep this close. Having said that, if Spain scores a few early goals, it's over.
Spain 2, Japan 2
Uruguay -1.5 (10 Units)
This is honestly the only favourite I like right now and I am going at this confidently. The United Arab Emirates played one leadup game to this event and they beat an FC Sion squad 1-0. That is a team from Switzerland who are decent but the match was just a friendly. I don't have much information on the Uruguay Olympic Team but I know that they also have Great Britain and Senegal in their group and they need to win this match. LUIS SUAREZ is playing for Uruguay as an overage player and so is Edison Cavani which is tremendous news. They are to be considered favourites to win in their first Olympic soccer since 1928.
Uruguay 4, United Arab Emirates 1
Gabon +1 (10 Units)
Nobody has ever heard of Gabon but they could be the surprise of this Group and they have a shot at advancing if they can get some points here. These are two very young squads who don't have much international overage exposure or resources in this tournament. Some of my power ratings have both squads failing to advance to the next round and that would mean this match probably ends in a draw. Again I don't know much about these two squads but I know that they are young, they have a lot to play for in what could be their only winnable match and this should be a good one.
Gabon 0, Switzerland 0
New Zealand +0.5 (10 Units)
I took a shot in the dark with the Women's squad against Great Britain yesterday and came away with a push. Not bad. This time I think I am on the right track with these guys who have a lot more experience. Belarus were horrendous in all three friendly matches they played leading up to this event losing 2-1 to Mexico's Olympic Team, drawing Morocco 0-0 and then losing 3-1 to France's UNDER-20 team. YIKES! New Zealand took only 1 point out of their 2008 Olympic Tournament experience but that point was against the host team China (they lost to Brazil and Belgium). I don't think this Belarus team is worth being favoured.
New Zealand 1, Belarus 0
Brazil -1.5 (10 Units)
Nobody is beating the SAMBA BOYS and you better believe that right now. I don't care how mediocre they looked against Great Britain in their tune up match which they won 2-0. This is the best team in this event, they have pretty much their entire National Team playing in the tournament since the Mens National Team is so young and in 2008 they won all their matches by at least 3 goals so this should be no different since a bunch of guys are back again this time around. Egypt is not a bad team and I have a feeling they can score a goal but at the end of the day they do not have the resources on defense to keep up once Brazil's forwards get going.
Brazil 3, Egypt 1
Great Britain -0.5 (10 Units)
British teams always disappoint on the big stage and this could go the same way but the Great Britain women won like they were supposed to and the Great Britain men should have the same start to their campaign. Senegal are a virtual unknown at this age and even their older Men's National Team has not done much since their nice run a few years ago so I don't trust them. We all know the crowd is going to be insane and they are going to put on a British style show for their boys so with that kind of atmosphere you have to go with the home side. Great Britain are going to push around Senegal to the point where the Senegal players don't attack like they usually do. GREAT BRITAIN WINS!
Great Britain 3, Senegal 0
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
